In 2023, ARUA (The African Research Universities Alliance) and The Guild (The of European Reseach-Intensive Universities) launched more than twenty Africa-Europe Clusters of Research Excellence. These CoREs are collaborative partnerships between expert researchers on the African and European continents, focussing on the four priority areas of the AU-EU Innovation Agenda: Public Health, Green Transition, Innovation & Technology and Capacities for Science.
The University of Bern is a partner in four CoRE initiatives, acting as a Co-Lead in two:
- CoRE Genomics for Health in Africa (CoRE-GHA: Co-Lead by the MCID, University of Bern): CoRE-GHA website, The Guild info page
- CoRE Sustainable Water and Land Resource Management for Human Well-Being (Co-Lead by University of Bern): The Guild info page
- CoRE Advanced Infectious Diseases Research and Training (CoRE-AID: MCID, University of Bern as Core Partner): The Guild info page
- CoRE Non-Communicable Diseases and Multimorbidity (University of Bern as Core Partner): The Guild info page
The MCID has played a key role in the development of a number of activities linked to CoREs, notably in the CoRE-Genomics for Health in Africa webinar series and Scientific Exchange Program (GHA-SciEx). The MCID is currently advertising the position of Scientific Officer, a role that would involve the coordination of the three biomedical-linked CoREs listed above. The closing date for applications is 20th December (see here or the pdf below).
